Anyone who has tried parking in Alexandra Road, Tonbridge, in the last couple of days may have been left slightly confused by the wonky yellow lines.
An eagle-eyed Twitter user posted a picture of faded double yellow lines with a single brighter line wobbling between the two of them.
@ChrisKemsley asked followers: "Would this class as a single or double line?"
Days later the line appeared to have been re-painted on the road even more out of place, crossing through both of the original lines.
The social media user accused the council of taking the mick, adding: "You've made it even worse."
These pictures might remind Tonbridge residents of scenes last week in Priory Road when workers resurfaced around an abandoned car.
But today Kent County Council has solved the mystery of what happened.
No, its workers didn't stop at the pub for lunch before staggering to this job in the afternoon.
The bright yellow line is actually a temporary stick-on one placed on top of the road surface after roadworks covered up the original markings.
The recent rain appears to have washed away the glue keeping this line in place, allowing it to slide into its new position.
A spokesman said: "Repairs to the road were carried out by one of our contractors but the markings failed.
“They are weather dependent and heavy rainfall can affect the quality of the lines sticking to the road.
“The contractor is due to fix the issue today at their own cost and we ask residents to bear with us.”
So now you know.
