The build-up to the general election this year seemed to focus mainly on younger voters, however, this Tonbridge retirement home saw their residents put questions to local candidates in a familiar format.
A 'Question Time' style debate took place at Churchill's Waterside Lodge, where more than 15 voters, aged 60 or over, discussed topics important to them with two local candidates, along with existing and prospective owners of the lodge.
Tom Tugendhart and Howard Porter, the Conservative and Green Party candidates for Tonbridge and Malling, respectively, were questioned by the residents on matters such as the need for an EU referendum and NHS funding.
The events come on the back of a recent survey by the retirement developer, which found a number of over-60s believe they are “unseen and unheard” by the major political parties.
Topics raised included Britain’s involvement in the EU, defence spending, foreign aid and NHS funding.
Each of the candidates outlined their key policies and lively discussions were had regarding the need for an EU referendum, the ability to defend the Falkland Islands and funding advances in medicine.
Neil Calderwood, Regional Managing Director for Churchill Retirement Living, said: “It is really important that the voice of the more mature voter is heard. We understand the specific issues that matter to our older generation and felt that it was really important to provide a platform on which these could be addressed.
"The response to the event was really positive and we very much appreciate Tom and Howard taking time out of their busy schedules to take part. We had a lively discussion, which everyone found informative and enjoyable.”
