The Hayesbrook School takes on #Travel2Tokyo challenge with Tonbridge and West Kent School Sports Partnership

A school in Tonbridge has been invited to take on a sports challenge that will take pupils on a virtual trip around the world.

Using their daily exercise, children, teachers and parents from The Hayesbrook School will work together to accumulate 8101 miles - the distance it takes to travel from London to Tokyo.

Tonbridge and West Kent School Sports Partnership (TWKSSP) challenged the students to take part in the #Travel2Tokyo initiative designed to encourage good physical and mental health in light of Covid-19.

Schools across the UK will be taking part in the scheme created by Get Set that was inspired by athletes finding new ways to train after the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were postponed.

Alex Weston, Director of TWKSSP said: “Anyone can be part of this challenge. If you are walking, jogging, running or cycling, whilst sticking 100% with social distancing guidelines, we are asking you to simply share the number of miles you are achieving each day. The virtual journey is not a competitive challenge, it’s a community undertaking. We want you to set your own goals, travel at your own pace and together, we will get to Tokyo.”

Those taking part can log their miles from today. The school on Brook St hopes to complete the challenge by Sunday May 31.

Andy Gore, Curriculum Leader for Physical Education at The Hayesbrook School said: “The virtual travel challenge is a great way for our students and their families to build exercise into their daily routine. The goal to reach Tokyo by the end of the month provides great motivation. Our students are very committed and determined, I know they will embrace the challenge and enjoy being physically active. Together with my family, we will be seeing how many of the 8101 miles we can cycle. Good luck everyone.”
