TRIBUTES have been paid to a sixth former who collapsed and died on the way to school.
The student, 16-year-old Madeline Smith, who was known as Maddie, had only recently moved to the Judd School in Brook Street, Tonbridge, after five years at the Weald of Kent Grammar School.
It is known that Madeline, who lived in Tunbridge Wells, had a long-standing heart condition.
Her younger brother is also a pupil at Judd School and her elder brother is believed to have been a former pupil.
The tragedy happened on Monday morning. The school nurse and counsellors were at the school to support staff and pupils as they learnt the news.
Madeline excelled in creative arts, especially drama and dance. She joined Judd School in September.
Staff say she made an instant impression with her cheerful smile and sunny personality. They say she was immensely popular among students and was a delight to teach.
Head of sixth form, Laurel Townend, said: "Maddie was a very talented girl with a vivacious and engaging personality."
Judd's head teacher Robert Masters said the whole school was in shock and mourning. "Even those who didn't know Maddie were touched by her smile," he said. "She lit up the place. She enjoyed every day and had the world at her feet."
Sue Rowell, headmistress of the Weald of Kent Grammar School, where Maddie had previously studied, said: "Her effervescence and sense of fun made her a popular student, and she was an excellent friend.
"She will be remembered with great affection by staff and students who knew her."
