On-loan Stevenage striker Makise Evans has made a quick impression on Tonbridge boss Jay Saunders.

The 18-year-old has joined Angels on a work experience loan deal from the League 1 club.

He started the 2-0 win over Hemel Hempstead last weekend and retained his place on Tuesday night as Tonbridge fought back from two goals down to draw at Welling.

Four points from the two games leave Angels 14th in National League South and they visit second-bottom Weymouth this Saturday.

“I’m really pleased with Makise,” said Saunders, who is also closing in on a deal for another forward.

“We nearly took him last year but it fell through.

“He scored a couple of goals out at St Albans and we knew he’d come in and work hard.

“He’s a young lad but physically he’s thick-set, he’s strong, he puts it about and works his socks off.

“I’ve been really pleased with him the last two games.

“He’s probably deserved a goal, to be honest, but he’s had a real positive impact.”

Sean Shields marked his 50th Angels appearance by scoring both goals in the win over Hemel.

Saunders paid tribute to the former Ebbsfleet man.

“He’s been great for us,” he said.

“I was really pleased for him on Saturday to get those two goals on his 50th game.

“He’s always a threat, with his goals and assists, even if he’s having a quiet game.”

Saunders named an unchanged side for the trip to Welling but a poor start saw Angels trail 2-0 at the break.

A double substitution and a change in system turned the game and they rescued a point with two more goals from defender Liam Vincent.

His first came from a free-kick and he made it 2-2 from the penalty spot as the Wings were reduced to 10 men.

Angels might even have won the game.

Saunders said: “The first 30 minutes was the worst we’ve been all season. I thought we were terrible.

“When you go to Welling, you’ve got to earn the right to play.

“You know what it’s going to be like, with the way they play and the pitch and everything, and we just never got going.

“We were miles off it and deservedly 2-0 down. If I’m honest it could have been three.

“We started to come into it in the last 15 minutes of the first half and then at half-time we made some changes.

“They had another chance to go 3-0 up right at the start of the second half but, from that point, we dominated.

“We got back in it and were probably unlucky not to win it in the end.

“I kept the same team because the performance on Saturday was good but I said to the boys on the bench you’re going to have a big part to play, and so it proved.

“Taylor Maloney came on in midfield and was outstanding and Crossley Lema was excellent at right-back after we went to a back four.

“We were able to get Deondre Date and Jeremy Santos on, too, and they both had an impact.

“We did the basics better in the second half, winning our battles, and on the ball we were a lot better.”

Vincent is having a season to remember after joining Tonbridge following his release by Portsmouth.

He impressed on loan last season but has taken his game to another level in the current campaign.

“I think he’s scored nine goals from left-wing-back, which is some going,” said Saunders.

“He’s really kicked on this season and I think being settled at a club has made a difference.

“When he was at Portsmouth he had a lot of loans and never really settled anywhere.

“Now he’s here and getting games under his belt and showing what he can do.

“He knows what we’re about and we know what he’s about. We’ve been good for each other.

“He scored a good free-kick and there was a bit of pressure on him for the penalty but he tucked it away nicely.”
