Tonbridge Angels made history on Tuesday night with their first penalty shoot-out victory.

The Angels were held to a 2-2 draw by Ryman League, Division 1 North Romford in the midweek League Cup game but claimed a quarter-final place after winning the shoot-out.

Boss Steve McKimm had previously seen his team lose on penalties to Hastings and Greenwich during his reign and was just delighted to have won.

He said: “It was good to get through to the next round. We didn’t perform in the first half but it was better in the second.”

Romford went two goals up but just before the break Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson halved the deficit. On-loan Welling man Mitchell Nelson levelled after 77 minutes.

McKimm has enjoyed penalty shoot-out success himself as a player – with a win for Gravesend in the FA Cup against Exeter – and was able to celebrate one as a manager thanks to goals from Tom Parkinson, Alex Akrofi, Nelson and Ugo Udogi. Tony di Bernardo also made two saves.

Angels are preparing for the visit of Staines Town on Saturday. Another home game, against Canvey Island, takes place on Tuesday.

McKimm said: “We need to try and get maximum points from those two games but it will be tough. Staines are a good side and Canvey Island have picked up.”
