Tonbridge’s National League South game against Chippenham last night was called off after 18 minutes due to heavy fog at Longmead.

Angels were 1-0 down when the referee called a halt and took the teams off.

Boss Steve McKimm said: “I’m not sure it should have started but the referee said we should and Chippenham had come a long way.

“From where we were, we couldn’t see the other side of the pitch.

“It was the same for both teams but one of their management team was having a joke, telling their player to keep the ball when he couldn’t even see him.

“As far as I’m aware the referee had a chat with both captains and it was when he asked for a ball to be kicked on and he couldn’t be seen that he decided that was it.

“Their keeper, when we were saying goodbye, said he couldn’t see the other end of the pitch.

“I feel for Chippenham, having travelled a long way, but the referee made the decision.

“I’ve listened to and read a few bits saying it was because we were losing but it was nothing to do with us - the referee called the game off.

“They’d scored after eight minutes and the ref called it off after 18. There’s still 70 minutes to play, so I take those comments with a pinch of salt.

“Obviously Chippenham were disappointed, because it’s a long journey, but it’s one of those with fog.

“It’s not like with rain where a decision can be made beforehand. You never know with fog.”
