Tonbridge’s players will spend Saturday on the training field as punishment for their early FA Cup exit against Redhill.

While their local rivals Maidstone, Ebbsfleet and Bromley are all in third qualifying round action, the Angels have been left with a blank weekend.

Defeat to lower-league Redhill hurt Tonbridge boss Steve McKimm and cost the club £4,500 in prize money.

McKimm said: “I’m gutted because it’s the FA Cup and everyone wants to be playing in it. The boys will be working hard on Saturday as a little bit of a punishment because we should be playing a game of football. We shot ourselves in the foot and I’m not happy.”

McKimm’s mood was improved somewhat by back-to-back wins this week. Tonbridge beat Hampton & Richmond 2-0 in the Ryman League, Premier Division on Saturday and then knocked Chatham out of the Robert Dyas League Cup on Tuesday, winning 2-1 at Longmead with a much-changed team.

McKimm said: “We needed that win on Saturday. We’d lost three games on the spin and needed to get back on track.

“We didn’t play as well as we have done all season – but we’ve played better and got beat. I was pleased with the result and clean sheet.

“On Tuesday I had a look at some players that have been doing well in the reserves and the youth team.”

Defender Jerrome Sobers has been ruled out for six weeks with a groin injury and Ben King (ankle) will be missing for at least a fortnight.
