Tonbridge manager Steve McKimm has praised Adam Coombes’ contribution to their National South survival push.

Striker Coombes scored a cracking free-kick to earn a 1-1 draw at Chelmsford on Saturday.

It was his fourth league goal since joining from Cray Wanderers in December and his all-round game has been good.

Tommy Wood’s impressive scoring form has grabbed the plaudits but Coombes’ efforts shouldn’t be overlooked.

“It was a great strike at Chelmsford,” said McKimm.

“He’s got bags of ability and he’s done that plenty of times in his career.

“There was a chat about who was going to take the free-kick, he said ‘I’m going to have it’ and he’s scored and then he’s hit the post a few minutes later.

“He’s done really well for us and he’s deserved the goals he’s got. He’s scored his fair share from the starts he’s had and his experience has been important for us.”

Tonbridge are eight points clear of the drop going into their Good Friday home game against Slough.

That’s followed by a trip to Dulwich on Easter Monday.

“I think another four points would keep us up, that’s how I’m looking at it, and the sooner we get them, the better,” said McKimm.

“If we can get them in the next two games, it’s been a solid couple of weeks for us. We haven’t shot ourselves in the foot many times since Christmas.

“I think Slough’s a tricky game. I know Jon (Underwood) and Neil (Baker, joint-managers), I played with them at Farnborough.

“I think they’re seven points off the play-offs with six games to go, and stranger things have happened.

“They’ll have aspirations and they’ll give us a real hard game. It’s good we’ve both got something to play for, otherwise it could be a nothing game, which is not good.

“Dulwich is the same. There’ll be a big crowd there, they’re just outside the play-offs and they’re fighting for everything.”

Tonbridge lost 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Welling in the Kent Senior Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night.

Angels - who included five 17-year-olds in their squad - led twice in the 90 minutes, Jake Embery and Ibrahim Olutade the scorers, but the Wings progressed.
