Tonbridge Angels manager Steve McKimm clears up who's on penalties

Steve McKimm has backed Joe Turner to keep taking penalties for Tonbridge Angels.

Turner missed from the spot against Weymouth on Saturday so Ade Yusuff stepped up when they were awarded a second spot-kick.

But it was Turner who resumed the responsibility against Dartford in midweek, scoring this time in a 3-2 win.

McKimm said: “Joe missed his penalty on Saturday and Ade stepped up and took his and scored.

“Everyone’s thinking Ade is on penalties but everyone misses penalties. What you’ve got to do is have faith in your players. Joe stepped up and scored.

“He has played in that further role and got his second goal and apart from a magnificent save by the keeper he would have had a hat-trick.

“It will give him confidence; he is a confidence player. He has three goals and three assists. He is one of our main players to be honest and if he keeps producing that week in, week out, then he’ll be all right this season.”

McKimm also discussed his formation after Tonbridge secured a win which lifted them out of the National League South relegation zone.

Turner scored twice before Tom Derry popped up with the late winner at Longmead.

He said: “A lot of people talk about the one up front but when you’ve got people like Joe Turner, D’Sean Theobalds and Khale Da Costa managing to go behind the forwards, it’s a pleasure to watch. They will only get better and enjoy it more, the more they play.

“There were times in the second half when we gave it away when we didn’t need to. We needed to be composed but that will come with experience of games at this level and trusting each other.

“I’m pleased with how we’ve started the season. We’ve never been out of a game, apart from Welling, where we haven’t felt we can get back into it.

“It’s them believing in themselves. This year it’s been a bit tentative at times but we’re playing against better players.

“If you’re not clever enough and keep the ball in the final third, very easily it’s at the other end in the back of the net.

“Maybe we’ve been a bit cautious at times (rather than be) on the front foot.”

Tonbridge are away to Chippenham on Saturday.
