Tonbridge have lost their past three games against Leiston – a trend Angels boss Steve McKimm is eager to end on Saturday when the teams meet in the FA Cup.
But the Suffolk side will start the second qualifying round tie at home full of confidence after ending Angels’ 10-game unbeaten run in the Ryman League Premier Division with a 1-0 win at Longmead last weekend.
McKimm said: “They are proving to be a bit of a bogey team for us – stats never lie. But we should have ended that hoodoo. We battered them but nothing went our way. We even missed a penalty.
“Had that gone in, who’s to say what the final score would have been? They then caught us at the death and scored a 90th-minute winner. It was a real sucker punch."
Leiston’s last-gasp winner saw them replace Angels in second place, with Tonbridge dropping to fifth.
As for the next instalment, McKimm said: “It may be an FA Cup game, but we will be treating it just like any other we’ve played this season and that has gone well enough.
“There is a nice bit of prize money (£4,500) on offer to the winner, but you can’t start to think about what’s at the end of the game. We’ve just got to focus on doing the job."
If there is a need for a replay, it will be at Longmead on Tuesday. If not, Angels will be in league action at Lewes on Wednesday.
