Approaches for Tonbridge striker Tommy Wood have dried up since he started his hot streak.

Wood’s late double in a 2-0 win over Billericay last weekend made it nine goals in as many games as Angels continued their National South survival push.

There was interest from clubs at lower levels when Wood was going through his lean spell earlier this season.

He was determined to stay and prove his worth and he’s certainly done that, helping Angels move nine points clear of danger and starring in their run to the FA Trophy last 16.

He’s in the sort of form that could attract attention at higher levels but he’s very much a Tonbridge player.

“Since he’s been on this run we’ve had no queries,” said manager Steve McKimm.

“If teams come in for any of my players I let them know straight away and then they’ve got a decision to make.

“At the end of the day it’s their career they’ve got to look after.

“At this moment in time, no one has come in for Tommy, and I hope they don’t.

“If it happens, the question will be put to him and it’s a decision for him.

“He’s in a rich vein of form, that’s nine in nine for him. The time there was interest, he wasn’t getting on the pitch, he was on the bench because he wasn’t scoring.

“Now he’s scoring, he’s playing but there’s no interest at the moment. That’s not to say there won’t be.

“That’s a discussion for if and when it happens.”

Wood was on the bench against Billericay but only because he’s been nursing a heel injury.

He replaced Adam Coombes midway through the second half and scored twice in eight minutes to give Tonbridge victory in front of another big Longmead crowd of 956.

“It’s a very good result because it puts more space between us and Billericay,” said McKimm, who takes his team to third-placed Oxford City this Saturday.

“It was a bit of a nothing game in my opinion and then we got the goal and it opens up.

“They needed to get a result, which left space, and we got a second goal and should have had another.

“In the end, we got the goals that mattered and I’m pleased for the boys to get the win in front of a big crowd.

“Billericay brought a few down but the crowds have been good and if the fans keep turning out, that only helps the club. Everyone played their part.”

Tonbridge are 17th and have a game in hand but safety remains the priority.

They’ve put themselves in a good position but McKimm is taking nothing for granted.

He said: “We’re nine points clear of Billericay and everyone’s said with our goal difference it’s like another point, and if we win our game in hand it could be 12 points.

“When we’re mathematically safe we can take a view on things but there’s still 14 games to go.

“Oxford will be an extremely difficult game. They’re a very good side.

“They’re not unbeatable at home but they are very, very good there and we need to be right on our game, which we have been recently.”
