Steve McKimm feels Tonbridge have already got the defeat at bottom side Harlow out of their system.
Angels lost 1-0 to an 85th-minute goal against the Bostik Premier strugglers last weekend.
It was a display manager McKimm said was nowhere near good enough but he got a response in the League Cup at Worthing on Tuesday.
Angels lost 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, Liam King giving them a first-half lead, but McKimm was happy with the performance.
He said: "We were nowhere near good enough on Saturday. I know it and the players know it.
"It wasn't what we're about. We didn't play to the levels we set ourselves but we were much better on Tuesday.
"I had conversations with a lot of players over the weekend.
"We needed that Worthing game and I know we went out on penalties but I was very pleased with the performance.
"The players took on board what I said and produced a performance."
Tonbridge have dropped to second place after three league games without a win, three points behind leaders Dorking.
They host in-form Leatherhead this Saturday looking to get back on track.
McKimm said: "We've hit a major bump in the road but if teams win their games in hand, we're still third.
"That's what I've said to the players. We're having a major bump but at worst we'll be starting from third place when we get our mojo back."
Young defender Callum Adonis-Taylor has joined VCD on loan for a month.
McKimm said: "Callum's already a very good centre-half but he'll get better the more he plays. It'll do him good to go there for a month.
"He's played against VCD before and Keith McMahon (manager) liked what he saw."
