Double Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Jemima Yeats-Brown has pulled out of the Judo World Masters.
Tonbridge’s Yeats-Brown, who defeated Northern Ireland’s Rachael Hawkes for bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August, had been hoping to finish the year in style.
Instead, however, she was left with a trip to hospital to deal with a neck injury which will rule her out of the event in Jerusalem, Israel.
On Twitter on Wednesday afternoon, she wrote: “Gutted to have to pull out of the World Masters next week in Israel after injuring my neck in training.
“A trip to A&E to get everything checked over ended up with me being admitted to hospital after a CT scan showed I had a fracture in my C4 in my neck.
“After eight hours strapped down to the bed and [being] told not [to] move, a further MRI scan and a very worried mum later, I was given the all clear and [it] turns out I just have a naturally dodgy-looking neck.”
The judoka, 27, now intends to rest up and spend quality time with family, including her sister, Jenny, who is fighting a brain tumour.
“I am more aware than most that life is too short and also how lucky I am that my neck is NOT broken,” she added.
“So with all this in mind, it was agreed with the medical team to miss the Masters and give my neck more time to heal, and not risk damaging anything further. So my 2022 judo year has come to an end.
“After an unbelievably difficult year, I still managed to put some wins together...life is short, THROW BIG!
“Christmas feels a little different this year but [I am] grateful to have got to the end of the year in one piece and looking forward to spending time with the family.”
Yeats-Brown, who won her first Commonwealth Games bronze in Glasgow eight years ago, had been due to compete at the World Masters from Tuesday until Thursday but says she will be back next year.
