Four fire engines were sent and approximately 500 sq m of grassland and trees near overhead power cables were alight.

Crews spent an hour tackling the blaze and put it out by 10.05pm.

Ismail Rahman, who lives near Greggs Wood Road, says he initially smelt smoke but didn’t suspect anything unusual.

“I thought this was normal, as quite a few people in the area do bonfires every now and then,” he said.

“It wasn't until my brother alerted us from his room that he could see a fire in the woods.

“This was around 9.18pm when we spotted it.”

Ismail believes it is “highly likely” to have been deliberate.

He added: “We've had three or so fires in that area of the woods in the last five months.”

A spokesman from the fire service confirmed that there were no reported injuries.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
