A head teacher has warned pupils to look up from their phones and pay attention to what's going on around them after a girl was approached by men in a white van, who tried to persuade her to get in the vehicle.

Linda Wybar issued a warning to parents and pupils at Tunbridge Wells Girls' Grammar School (TWGS) after a girl was approached by the van this morning in Garden Road, just a short distance from the school.

The full statement said: "This morning in Garden Road a TWGS pupil was approached by people in a white van and invited to get in.

"She ignored them and managed to get home safe and sound.

"The girl did get part of the registration number and police have been contacted.

"Please be particularly careful, walking with others if possible, but in all cases being aware of what's happening around you.

"Don't be focused on your phones or listening to music.

"If anything happens, go to somewhere safe for help, for example a shop, and do tell your parents and the police."

The warning comes just days after children in Sevenoaks were also approached by men in white vans.
