A former grammar school teacher has appeared in court charged with possessing 188 indecent images of children.

Martin Davies taught at The Skinners' School in Tunbridge Wells until 2007, but continued in a voluntary role until last year.

At a hearing at Sevenoaks Magistrates' Court yesterday the 64-year-old of Langton Green did not enter a plea to five counts of making indecent images.

The Birchetts Avenue resident is alleged to have committed the offences in April last year, downloading two category A, one category B and 185 category C images. Category A is the most serious while C is the least.

Headteacher Edward Wesson said: "Martin Davies had a long career at Skinners'. He retired in 2007 and still had certain involvement on a voluntary basis until last year."

The former English teacher who was at the school for four decades was released on conditional bail to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on February 13.
