A mother was left with an agonising decision to make after being advised to abort two of her triplets in order to protect the third.

Elizabeth Brewer fell pregnant with Oriana, Dallon and Deacon but at just 13 weeks was offered a selective reduction.

Mrs Brewer and husband, Timo, were originally expecting twins, but later scans revealed the 41-year-old was carrying triplets, a pair of identical twins, and a third, separate embryo.

She said: “I’d gone back for a second scan after being told we were expecting twins because I was having some pain, I joked and said to the nurse I always thought I’d have triplets but when she said I might be right I couldn’t believe it.”

Doctors at Kings College Hospital in London said there was a high risk the single baby could have Downs Syndrome and if the couple were to abort the twins it would give it a better chance of full health.

The Tunbridge Wells pair had twins seven years ago, but lost one at just 16 days old so were left with the almost impossible decision to make.

Mrs Brewer said: “It made me feel absolutely awful, how could I choose between the three but then we were worried about putting them all at risk.

"After having our previous set of twins at 25 weeks I know how terrifying things like that can be.”

Despite the odds the couple, of, Delves Avenue, took all three babies to full term and the babies were born healthy at 36 weeks and have just celebrated
their first birthday alongside brothers Drew, seven, and Devon, five.

Mrs Brewer, who works as a property developer, said: “We knew straight away we weren’t going to take the reduction, we experienced miscarriages in the past so we felt blessed to be having triplets.

“It was a miracle so there was no way we were going to abort two. The hospital respected our wishes straight away.”

The triplets are settling in well at home and their older brothers are always on hand to give mum a helping hand.

Mrs Brewer, a former Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School pupil, said: “I think if the boys weren’t so great with the babies it would be a lot harder.

"They said they want us to have more already. The babies love it when their older brothers come in the room they start giggling and wiggling about. It's amazing to watch."
