Investigations have begun into a sinkhole that opened up in a busy junction in Tunbridge Wells.

The hole, on Upper Grosvenor road, had been resurfaced by Kent County Council on the morning of Wednesday, July 23 before it opened up again in the afternoon.

It has been revealed that it was caused by a leaking water main and South East Water are carrying out repair works on the five-inch diameter main.

Paul Seeley, operations director at South East Water, said: “The leak was found on a pipeline within the centre of the crossroad junction.

“Our contractor undertook and completed repairs to the pipeline last night [July 24], they will then return tomorrow [July 26] to complete the road repairs.

“We are aware this work is taking place on a busy junction so I would therefore like to apologise for any inconvenience that has been caused and thank motorists for their patience.”
