Neighbours were evacuated from properties last night as a commercial premises caught fire.

Fire crews were called to a blaze which started in a basement in Calverley Road in Tunbridge Wells at around 8pm.

Six fire engines attended, including two from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets, compressed air foam, smoke curtains and a fog spike to extinguish the blaze and stop the flames from spreading.

Two people were treated by firefighters for minor smoke inhalation.

It is believed the incident was caused accidentally when faulty cabling set fire to paper stored in the basement.

The flames spread to the first floor, with some smoke damage caused to the second floor and neighbouring properties.

Witnesses described seeing the piant peeling from the upstairs building.

Fire crews cleared the scene just after 11pm.
