Plans to develop agricultural land into new playing fields in Tunbridge Wells have been renewed in a bid to expand sports facilities in the area.

It could see the existing Hawkenbury Recreation Ground extended into an undeveloped field allowing space for six more pitches, new changing rooms and 80 additional parking bays.

The plans were submitted on behalf of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council which hopes to make the changes as part of its vision to create several new 'sports hubs' in the area to cater for the growing population.

It will mean transforming the 5.7 hectare field which is directly south of the Indoor Bowls Centre.

New access would be created from High Woods Lane to replace the existing field gate and the bowling green, which is currently unused, could also be transformed into youth football provisions.

The plans show two full size adult pitches, one of which would be a 4G ‘rubber crumb’ pitch, are on the cards along with two large youth pitches, one smaller youth pitch, and an under 9/10 pitch.

Some will feature “Ball Stop" net fencing to prevent balls being kicked into neighbouring properties and the new car park.

The scheme was initially approved in 2017 and planning permission was due to expire in May, but plans have now been renewed.

Details of planning applications from across the county can be found in our Public Notices section
