A town centre road has been closed today after a burst water main caused part of the carriageway to collapse.

The A264 Crescent Road in Tunbridge Wells is shut between Mount Pleasant Road and Calverley Road while South East Water engineers work on the issue.

It is understood the pipe burst at around 3.30am and as a result some properties in the area may find they have no water or their supply is at low pressure.

Regional network manager for South East Water, Andy Beeston, said: "I'm really sorry for any disruption caused by a burst water main in Crescent Road, Tunbridge Wells.

"Specialist technicians arrived at the site of the burst water pipe at 5am and have closed the road to keep everyone safe while we carry out repair work.

"Approximately 15 households in Crescent Road and the surrounding area reported having no water or low tap water pressure, but we have re-routed water around the network to return drinking water supplies to affected customers.

"We are continuing to fix the broken pipe and will reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so.

"Once again I’m very sorry for any disruption this emergency work may be causing and would like to thank residents and road users for their patience while we carry out the repair."

It had been hoped the repairs to the water network would be completed by around 10am, although the estimate from the water company now is 2.30pm.

Drivers are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys during this morning's rush hour as a result of the closure.

Access to Crescent Road Car Park will be via Carrs Corner roundabout into Crescent Road.
