A CCTV image has been released in the hunt for thieves who stole an elderly woman's purse and then used her bank card to spend hundreds of pounds.

The victim, 90, was shopping in Royal Victoria Place on September 17 when she was reportedly targeted.

She was browsing clothing stalls in the centre of the lower mall between 12.10pm and 12.25pm, when a man approached and began talking to her about the clothes.

The victim engaged in brief conversation and then moved away, however the man continued to try and talk to her.

Shortly after, she realised her purse was missing and discovered her bank card had been fraudulently used to spend almost £2,000.

A police investigation is ongoing and it is believed two people may have been involved in the theft and use of the card.

The man pictured may have important information which can assist officers with their enquiries and anyone who recognises him is asked to call the west Kent appeals line on 01622 604100, quoting reference YY/033750/18.

Chief inspector Pete Steenhuis said: "On this occasion we believe the victim was seen inputting her PIN prior to the card being stolen.

"It is vitally important to protect your card details when paying for purchases or using cash machines to withdraw money.

"I would also urge shoppers to remember some simple steps to safeguard their possessions.

"Handbags should always be zipped up or fastened shut and kept to the front of you where they can be seen.

"Anything containing valuables should never be left unattended on top of a pram, shopping trolley or a mobility scooter."
