A Twitter account that mocked a Pakistani-born politician has been taken down after he complained that it was racist.

Nasir Jamil, the Conservative deputy mayor of Southborough Town Council, is himself a regular user of social media, but he took offence when the parody Twitter account appeared last Friday.

It used broken English, contained sexual profanity and suggested he liked cross-dressing.

Mr Jamil reported the account to the social media platform and it was removed on Monday.

Mr Jamil who has previously been the Tunbridge Wells Borough Councillor for St John's Ward until he lost his seat in 2018, is seeking election in the Culverden ward this May. He believes the account was set up by his political opponents.

He said: "I have no objection to debating the real issues with my opponents, but this account was just a personal attack and deeply hurtful.

"It mocked the way I walked, the way I talked."

Mr Jamil, a Muslim, said the account had also distressed his wife and six-year-old daughter, who told him in tears: "Bubba, this is not you!"

Mr Jamil, 50, is himself an IT consultant and has genuine Twitter and Facebook accounts and his own website which he uses to connect to his electorate.

Andrew Kennedy, the Conservative Party's campaign director for West Kent, said: "Parody is one thing. Laughing at someone's speaking style and their name is actually racist and cruel. Such actions debase politics and have no place in modern campaigning."
