A man in his 50s has been arrested after banners promoting events in a town were "slashed and torn down".
Police say banners have been targeted in recent weeks around Tunbridge Wells.
Officers were called to a report of criminal damage opposite the railway station last Thursday.
A suspect was identified who was seen to walk towards The Pantiles, where a large number of people were attending a jazz music event.
Plain clothes officers spotted the suspected and searched him.
The search revealed he was carrying a utility knife in his coat pocket.
The 56-year-old from Tunbridge Wells was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage, possessing a knife in public and theft, in relation to stealing banners.
He was later released pending further investigation.
