Daniel Septimiu, 45, was watching TV with his wife while his four-year-old daughter slept when he heard an "incredible" bang.
He said: "It was a huge, loud bang. I didn't know what was happening. It sounded like a war or a plane crashing.
"We ran to the window and there was dust everywhere, it was really scary."
The railway worker said the bang lasted around 10 seconds after the bus crashed into a car and fences along the usually quiet road.
"It's lucky nobody died," he added.
"The streets is usually filled with pedestrians or children walking home from school - it's lucky it happened so late.
"Two of the houses are seriously damaged. If it wasn't for the gates outside one would have an Arriva bus in it's dining room."
CCTV footage from one of Daniel's neighbours showed the bus driving past the camera on the hilly road at moments before the crash.
The bus was removed from the scene last night.
