Plans to install a Ferris wheel and dodgems alongside Tunbridge Wells' ice rink have been scrapped after opposition from neighbours.

Earlier this month Tunbridge Wells Borough Council had put forward plans for additional attractions at Calverley Grounds over the Christmas period.

They would have run for nine months, alongside the temporary ice rink.

But after concerns from residents and local groups, the authority has decided not to go ahead with the idea.

Cllr Jane March, cabinet member for tourism and leisure, said: "I know that the team behind the ice rink will be disappointed but I feel that on this occasion we should be listening to residents, therefore I have asked for the planning application to be formally withdrawn.

"The ice rink is a delightful feature of the Christmas scene in Tunbridge Wells and the idea of the enhanced offering was to appeal to younger people and those who want to visit the rink but don’t want to skate."

All nearby residents who were consulted objected to the plans.

Among the concerns were fears over noise and privacy, with the Ferris wheel affording fairgoers views into neighbouring houses.
