Tunbridge Wells FC to discipline Ola Williams after robbery conviction

A Kent football club says a player convicted of being part of a gang that robbed a teenager will be disciplined.

Tunbridge Wells FC released a statement saying it supported the sentence imposed by the court, but indicated the player would continue to be part of the squad.

The statement did not name the player, but on Monday KentOnline reported full back Ola Williams was among a gang who took part in an attack near Ashford International station.

Williams, who was 17 at the time of the incident, admitted two robbery charges after being caught on CCTV targetting the 15-year-old victim and demanding his watch. He was ordered to carry out 160 hours of unpaid work.

Williams said when he was arrested that the incident had been 'a prank.'

The full back has made nine starts for Tunbridge Wells this season, scoring one goal and receiving one red card.

The club statement said: "The offences have been dealt with by the courts and it is not for Tunbridge Wells Football Club to revisit the decisions of the judicial system. The club supports the findings of the courts and the sentences imposed; including the payment of compensation to the victims.

"The player was of previous good character and had no previous convictions. The player’s commitment and attitude whilst at Tunbridge Wells FC has been exemplary. The player has apologised for his actions and deeply regrets the distress caused to the victims.

"However, for bringing the club into disrepute, the player in question will now be subject to internal disciplinary procedures.

"For the avoidance of doubt, in no way does the club condone the actions of the player.

"All players at Tunbridge Wells Football Club are subject to the club’s Code of Conduct and are made aware of their responsibilities as role models in the community.

The club now consider the matter to be closed and will be making no further comment."

Darryl Zhiwaki, 19, and Alhaji Kuyaten, 18, both from south London also admitted robbery charges.

Zhiwaki was ordered to carry out 160 hours of unpaid work after pleading guilty to two charges and Kuyaten will have to do 120 hours of work for the community after admitting one robbery.

All three were told they will have to pay their victims £150 each in compensation.
