An ex-soldier from Tunbridge Wells is set to tackle a 100k walk to raise money for a military charity, for the second year in a row.
54-year-old Gary Robinson hopes to finish the walk from London to Brighton in under 21 hours 18 minutes, the record he set last year.
He decided to sign up to raise more money for Blind Veterans UK after successfully completing the walk in 2014, contributing £1700 to the charity in the process.
Gary was in the Army from 1978 until 1990 in the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragon Guards, working on the Main Battle Tank and serving in West Germany, Canada, Northern Ireland and the UK.
Due to this background he wanted to give back to the military, with Blind Veterans UK, formerly St Dunstan's, being the charity of choice.
He said: "I am looking at knocking of at least the 18 minutes this year, however, as long as I complete the course in under the 24 hour mark I would still be happy."
"I see this as a challenge to myself. This is by no means an easy task."
The event is Blind Veterans UK’s biggest annual fundraiser and takes walkers from Putney, south London, through countryside paths in Surrey, Sussex and the North and South Downs to the charity’s centre in Ovingdean, Brighton.
Gary added: "The support Blind Veterans UK provides to ex-Service men and women with sight loss is incredible. It’s great to support such a worthy cause once again."
"The atmosphere last year was really great and pushed me to try my hardest. I was well prepared, walking in my boots and had some energy gels which seemed to do the trick. I hope that this year that’ll be enough."
