Students in Kent are being offered the opportunity to take part in 'selfie' workshops run by Tunbridge Wells museum and art gallery.

The venue is offering the workshops as part of an outreach opportunity to secondary schools in the borough.

The Six, one-day events are inspired by the 18th century Camden family portraits at the museum, led by award-winning international photographer Andrew Bruce and will take place at individual schools, free of charge.

According to the museum, the ‘selfie’ is not really a 21 century invention – its history can be traced back to much earlier self portrait painting, where the artist would look at his reflection in a mirror in order to paint his likeness.

Andrew Bruce will give a short talk to pupils, linking selfies to the history of self portraiture. He will oversee a photography workshop where participants will create their own self portraits and selfies, inspired by the camden pieces.

They will have the opportunity to share these pictures on social media using the hashtag #TWMAGselfie to link to the museum's pages.

The first workshop is at St Gregory’s Catholic School on November, 18.

The Museum Outreach Staff will bring along to each school large-scale reproductions of the Camden Family Portraits.
