Olympic boxer Anthony Ogogo cut the red ribbon on a new supermarket.

The bronze medallist officially opened the Aldi in Tunbridge Wells in the Great Lodge Retail Park, on Longfield Road yesterday.

It is the first store to open in the town and will be run by manager Matt Cook and a team of 45 colleagues.

Anthony, a retired professional middleweight boxer who won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games, said: "It’s been an honour to be a part of Aldi’s store opening. I’ve had a great time talking to both the adults and children of Tunbridge Wells about healthy eating and my experience of the Olympics.”

The star gave away complementary bags of fresh fruit and vegetables to shoppers as part of Aldi's Get Set To Eat Fresh campaign, which hopes to inspire more than a million children aged five to 14 to learn more about the benefits of cooking healthy food.

The shop was previously due to be opened by Lizzy Yarnold, the Olympic skeleton race gold medallist who grew up in nearby West Kingsdown, but the choice of athlete was altered in early October.

An Aldi spokeswoman said: "Lizzie Yarnold could no longer make the Aldi Tunbridge Wells store opening due to a change in the schedule."

Mr Cook said: “It was lovely to meet our new customers and I look forward to meeting more of the community in the coming weeks. I’d also like to say a big thank you to the wonderful Anthony Ogogo, for being a part of our celebrations.”

Local charities and food banks are encouraged to register with the store's 'neighbourly' scheme, to receive regular donations of leftovers from the supermarket.

The store is open Monday to Saturday 8am to 10pm and and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
