BT says little-used Tunbridge Wells phonebox must disappear unless the community wants to purchase it

If this phone box is looking a little lonely, that’s because hardly anyone ever visits it.

BT has announced its intention to remove the payphone at the junction of Frant Road and Broadwater Down in Tunbridge Wells after only 52 calls were made from it in the past 12 months – just one a week.

None of them were emergency calls.

BT says there is good mobile phone coverage in the area for all of the big mobile networks: EE, Three, 02 and Vodaphone.

It has posted a notice on the box giving people 90 days, that is until October 16, to object.

Any objections must be made by writing to or emailing Tunbridge Wells council.

Responses can be made via the borough’s planning website here, quoting application number 23/01927.

However, every cloud has a silver lining, and BT said there was the opportunity for the public to adopt the phone box and put it to another use.

Many communities now use redundant phone boxes to house a defibrillator, while some have been turned into libraries, although it’s true that the old-fashioned red phone boxes have proved more popular with the public for this purpose.
