National Highways has described it as “a police-led incident”.

Its statement said: “Emergency services including Kent Police are in attendance.

“Police investigations will be taking place and the road is likely to remain closed for several hours.”

The northbound side has reopened but the A21, as of 9.30pm, remains shut southbound.

The diversion is as follows:

Leave the A21 at the A264 Pembury Road intersection and at the junction turn left onto the A228 towards Five oak Green.

Follow the A228 to the roundabout with the B2017 Badsell Road and take the third exit onto the B2017.

Continue on the B2017 to the junction with the B2160 at Paddock Wood and turn right onto the B2160.

Follow the B2160 back to the A21 southbound at Kipping's Cross and at the roundabout take the first exit to rejoin the A21 south.
