Two people were taken to hospital for treatment after a crash involving a car and a lorry.

The A21 was shut in both directions following what police described as "a serious collision" near Tunbridge Wells earlier today.

Police were called to the scene at around 11am after reports the lorry and a car had collided on the the coastbound carriageway, close to a junction for Pembury.

Kent Police officers were joined at the scene by firefighters, ambulance crews and the air ambulance.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "Ambulance crews have attended and were joined at the scene by the air ambulance service following reports of an RTC on the A21 near Capel.

"One patient was airlifted to King's College Hospital and another was taken, also to King's, by road.

"Both patients suffered potentially serious injuries."

Traffic was gridlocked for more than three hours as a result of the accident, which has closed the road between A26 Woodgate Way and Longfield Road.

A police spokesman had said: "Where possible, motorists are advised to avoid the area and plan alternative routes."

One motorist who was among those stuck in the resulting traffic jams said they only began to move at around 2.30pm as the road was reopened.
