Roadworks set to plague a town centre for most of 2019 get underway today.

Tunbridge Wells town centre is undergoing work to make it safer and more accessible for pedestrians.

Civic Way, outside the library and town hall, will be closed from today until March 18.

During that time there will be no vehicle access, parking spaces will be available for blue badge holders at Crescent Road car park.

Pedestrian access will still be open.

As well as Civic Way's closure, there will also be temporary traffic lights for one night, while the pedestrian island at the junction with Monson Road is removed.

No date has been set for the island's removal.

The closure of Civic Way is the first phase of 34 weeks worth of work, which are expected to end on September 21.

A Tunbridge Wells Borough Council spokesperson said: "The scheme will improve the look of this part of the town centre and make it a safer, more pleasant place for pedestrians.

"By reducing the width of the Mount Pleasant Road and discouraging vehicles more public space will be created. The setting of the War Memorial will be enhanced with the improvements creating the sense of a public square for use on civic occasions like Remembrance Sunday."
