The Royal Tunbridge Wells Croquet Club are to host an introduction weekend later this month for potential members

Royal Tunbridge Wells Croquet Club are to host an introduction to the sport for potential new members this month.

Newcomers can play at the club’s Calverley Grounds in central Tunbridge Wells, a top-class facility that hosted the Golf Croquet World Championship last year.

The club have said: “Time on your hands? Want to find out how to play an outdoor sport? Need some gentle exercise? Why not come and learn how to play Croquet at our local club in Tunbridge Wells! A game for all ages from 9 to 90.”

The club reopened at the same time as a number of other outdoor sports venues hosting golf and tennis.

The first introductory sessions are scheduled for Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11. Sessions will be for complete beginners, and teach from holding a mallet to being able to play complete games. The cost is just £25, with a subsequent membership for 2020 of £35 for those wishing to join. (Regular membership is £100 per annum).

The club will provide all equipment needed. The only requirement is that players wear flat soled shoes, such as trainers. Course numbers are limited as the club adhere to Covid-19 guidelines.

The Royal Tunbridge Wells Croquet Club is about 50 years old and have three lawns to play on at Calverley Park.

Both association croquet and golf croquet are played at the club, providing free coaching to members throughout the season. They run several internal and external tournaments annually and their members range in skills from novices to international players.
