Marden Bowls Club celebrates its 50th anniversary this year - the club was founded in 1971.

It will hold an open day on Saturday, May 22, giving potential new members the chance to try their hand at the game - with some expert tuition on hand if desired - or just to have a look round.

The event will run from 2pm till 5pm. All equipment will be provided except that guests must bring their own pair of flat shoes.

The club has come a long way in 50 years. From humble beginnings, it now has an impressive clubhouse and a green that is the envy of many others.

There will be a number of events to mark the anniversary this year, including a Celebration Day on July 12, when invited guests and members will enjoy a buffet and drinks before members contest a celebration competition.

There are also games arranged with the Kent County Bowling Association, the Kent Past Presidents, Century-old Cranbrook, and the 50-year-old Staplecross clubs during the season.

The 2021 outdoor season has already started, with Covid-19 prevention measures in place.

The club holds a busy fixture list with both friendly and competitive league games.

Spokesman Brian Cooper said: “We’re excited to be celebrating our 50th anniversary. Marden Bowls Club is a friendly club that offers so much more than bowls.

"We have a bar and hold social events like BBQ’s and quizzes.

"In winter, we play on two short mats in the clubhouse.”

He said: “Bowls is a great sport and we look forward to giving a warm welcome to new members on May 22.

"For anyone who is interested but can’t make it that day, we are happy to arrange a different date or time.”

The club is based in Howland Road, Marden, with the entrance opposite the back of Marden Village Club and next to Bowling Green Cottage.
