A flood alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for parts of the Weald this morning.

The alert is in force for the Upper River Medway and flooding is possible from Forest Row, in East Sussex, to Penshurst, in the Weald.

The agency is warning residents to be prepared as river levels are rising as a result of heavy rainfall this morning.

The flooding is expected from 10am this morning, with a possibility of flooding for low lying land and roads close to the river, particularly around Forest Row, Ashurst, Hartfield and Penshurst.

Properties are not expected to be flooded.

The Environment Agency says that the heavy rainfall is expected to clear later this morning but further heavy isolated showers are possible through the rest of the day.

A spokesperson said: "We expect river levels to remain high until later this evening. We are closely monitoring the situation.

"Our incident response staff are actively monitoring the situation and are checking screens and river channels. Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses in the area."
