Flood alerts have been issued across Kent following heavy rainfall this morning.

They are in place for the Upper River Medway and Upper River Stour from 2pm today (December 9).

The Environment Agency has warned residents to “be prepared" as river levels rise because of the downpours earlier today.

Flooding is expected to affect low-lying land and roads around Forest Row, Ashurst, Hartfield, Penshurst and Balls Green, in the Weald area.

Elsewhere in the county, areas along the River Great Stour, from Charing Heath to the A2070, Ashford, Great Chart, Singleton, and communities near the East Stour, Whitewater and Ruckinge Dykes and Aylesford Stream could also be flooded.

Although it is expected to be largely dry for the rest of today, the government organisation is monitoring rivers for blockages.

It has told residents to avoid using low-lying footpaths and bridges near watercourses and to not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

The warning is expected to be updated by 9pm this evening.
