While the property was raided, the trio was threatened amid demands for money, with one of the burglars reportedly wielding a chisel.

The group fled at 8.55pm, having stolen cash and jewellery, along with the victims' mobile phones and house phone.

Det Sgt Ian McCarthy said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for this family and thankfully no one suffered any injuries.

"We are continuing to make extensive enquiries to identify those responsible but also now need help from members of the public, who may have seen anything at all suspicious.

"One of the items reported stolen was a white metal Seiko watch, engraved with two names and so we’d also like to remind the likes of jewellers or pawn brokers to also report suspicious items, which they may be offered."

All of the offencers were wearing dark clothing, including gloves, baseball caps and scarves to conceal their faces.

Some of the offenders are thought to have accents described as "northern" or Irish.

Witnesses, or anyone with information, can help police by calling 01622 604100, quoting reference YY/002018/18. Alternatively, call Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
