A car veered off the road and crashed into a primary school this morning.

Emergency crews raced to Marden Primary School at around 7am this morning - just an hour before the school run.

The black Volkswagen Polo had mounted the pavement and careered over a boundary wall at the site in Goudhurst Road.

The vehicle then smashed through railings and into a telegraph pole, which was left leaning precariously outside a classroom.

The male driver, who was reportedly in his 30s, appeared to be disorientated but did not require medical treatment.

Kent Police attended the accident alongside paramedics and the fire brigade.

The school's caretaker Krzysztof Tarka said: "I was opening the school just before 7am when I heard a loud noise.

"At first I thought it was from inside the building but then I looked out of the window and there was a car.

"I went outside and saw the driver, he was shaking and nervous but was unharmed. He told me he had no idea what had happened, that he had lost control and he thought it had something to do with the back wheels."

Police officers took a statement from the man, who was then reportedly picked up by friends.

The road, which leads to the village's railway station and is used by commuters for parking, has been closed to lorries as electricity cables are now low hanging.

The school is open as normal and all electricity is still on, with one lane of the road outside the building closed while repairs are made.
