It may be a village cricket match that attracts about 150 spectators, but this year’s Marden annual Saints and Sinners’ fundraiser has been backed by some of England’s cricketing greats.

The match – a regular fixture for 11 years – between the church and the Unicorn pub, is being promoted by former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan and legendary batsman and pundit Geoff Boycott in two short videos.

It takes place on Sunday, July 5, and will raise money for Cancer Research UK. The choice of the charity was inspired by three villagers who are battling the disease.

"Forget the Ashes this summer – it’s all about the Saints and the Sinners," says Michael Vaughan in his.

While Mr Boycott, who overcame throat cancer more than 10 years ago, quips in his: "You’ll have a better day than watching England versus Australia."

Club captain James Lowther said the videos had been organised by a club member who works for Channel 5.

"We’re pretty excited about them," he said, adding: "I think the thing with cancer is you don’t know how you can help.

"If you get the opportunity to find a route to show your support, giving money to a fabulous organisation like Cancer Research, to support the people who have been suffering from cancer, it seems to be a good way to do things."

Club member Elliot Mantle, owner of The Green Door salon in the High Street, Trudi Westhrop, and Mark Judd, whose father – former Mayor Robin Judd – first hosted the match, are all currently battling cancer.

Mr Lowther said: "The positive way those suffering from cancer have dealt with it has inspired us."

Some £6,000 is expected to be raised from the day, which includes match funding by Mr Lowther’s employer, Fidelity Worldwide Investment.

The teams will open play at 2pm at the club in Albion Road, with a fun day and barbecue starting at 1pm.

The Saints represent the church, while the Sinners represent the pub.

Mr Lowther added: "It’s probably fair to say you see the Saints in the pub as much as the Sinners though!"
