A man has been jailed for almost two years after he left a blood stain on a sheet during a burglary.
Ernie Smith was linked to the break in at a property in Horns Road, Hawkshurst, after he cut himself as he smashed his way through a conservatory and french doors.
The 32-year old, formerly of Warlingham, broke into the property in September, forcing the doors of a conservatory before breaking through a pair of french doors which led inside.
Smith was sentenced to 21 months at Maidstone Crown Court on Tuesday, having previously pleaded guilty to burglary.
The court heard how Smith had rifled through drawers and cupboards in the victim's bedrooms and study.
Officers were able to place him at the scene after discovering the bloodied sheet and sending it for forensic examination.
Smith, who was arrested in September and initially refused to comment, confessed to the crime after being presented with the evidence during interview.
It is suspected Smith had prior knowledge of the property after the victim recalled someone with the same name carried out roof repairs on the house around five years ago.
Investigating officer Det Con Raj Dusanjh said: "Smith’s selfish and destructive actions have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage, as well as a great deal of stress to the victim, who was on holiday when he broke in.
"Unfortunately for Smith, we detected his blood at the crime scene which appears to have been left as he reached to open or close a bedside drawer.
"He has refused to tell us exactly what he stole but I would hope now that he uses his time in prison wisely and contemplates the impact his crime has had on those affected."
