Staplehurst schoolgirl raising funds for charity Plastic Oceans UK

Why do only one good deed when you can do two at the same time?

That was the view of six-year-old Isla Underdown, who was so concerned about the state of our oceans that she has embarked on a mammoth litter pick around her home village of Staplehurst while at the same time raising funds through sponsorship for the charity Plastic Oceans UK.

She said: "I'm a great litter picker. Litter makes me sad because turtles get stuck so I want to collect as much litter as I can to stop it going to the ocean."

Isla has already collected 31 bags of rubbish and she's planning not to stop till she reaches 100.

In the meantime, her JustGiving page has raised £1,485 for Plastic Oceans which campaigns to reduce the estimated 8m tons of plastic that finds its way into the oceans each year.

Isla's mum, Kerry Underdown, said: "She is probably the most glam litter picker you will ever see. Her favourite thing to collect is the plastic that goes around the top of a pack of drinks cans."
