Con artists could be trying to steal money from pubs and restaurants with fake dry cleaning bills.
Kent Police has received reports that a man has been visiting licensed premises demanding money because drinks had been spilled by staff over his partner’s clothes.
Bar staff are being asked to report any suspicious behaviour and remain on guard against tricksters.
On Monday, November 3, at around 1.30pm it was reported that a man entered a pub in Little Mount Sion, Tunbridge Wells, and claimed that during a previous visit a member of staff had spilt red wine over his wife’s clothing.
He asked for money but was refused and left.
The following day a man asked for £20 at a bar in Church Road, Lamberhurst.
On this occasion he was handed cash after he showed what appeared to be a handwritten cleaning bill as proof.
Further attempts have been reported in the Goudhurst area as well as in Maidstone Road, Matfield where two pubs refused to pay a man and told him to leave.
A 38-year-old man from Sevenoaks has been arrested in connection with these incidents and has been bailed, pending further enquiries, until Monday, December 22.
Sergeant Andy Miller said: “We believe that these incidents all involve the same person and because the amount of money being requested is relatively small, it is likely that other businesses who may have been targeted may have paid out to avoid any hassle.
“Thankfully, it would appear that this man has left empty handed on most occasions but I would like to remind owners and staff to keep any eye out for anything suspicious and please call police if you think your premises has been targeted.”
