A primary school which set up a foodbank, went shopping for parents who were isolating, and provided welfare checks for pupils, has won an award for its hard work and community spirit throughout the pandemic.
Hawkhurst Primary School has won the Gift of Gratitude certificate at the Hero of Hawkhurst Awards, a brand new giving scheme set up by the local Scouts group.
It was designed as a way of recognising those who went above and beyond through Covid-19 and to give the community a much needed boost before Christmas.
On Thursday staff at the school in Rye Road were given their certificate along with a hamper of locally sourced cheeses, biscuits, jams and chutneys.
Head teacher Jodi Hacker said: "I am so lucky to have such a dedicated and passionate team of staff who have worked tirelessly throughout this pandemic and have always had a smile for the children and time to talk to pupils and families who have needed support and reassurance.
"I am also very grateful for the ongoing support from my Governors and for the support of our parents who have trusted us to keep their children safe and been flexible when we have needed to make changes to the running of the day."
With five awards up for grabs, Hawkhurst school received so many nominations, a sixth category was created especially for them.
Jess Gould from Hawkhurst Scouts Group said: "We decided we wanted to give something back so we set up the scheme for people to nominate their community hero.
"We had so many nominations for Hawkhurst Primary School we felt it was important to give the staff the thanks they deserved and we were really pleased we were able to do that."
The other five winners will be selected today and will receive a festive basket donated by local businesses.
The awards have been so successful, Hawkhurst Scouts Group hopes to implement something similar again next year.
