Fresh from his Oscar win, Joe Pesci beat Robert De Niro to the part of Vinny Gambini. Vinny arrives in a small town in Alabama, with his out-of-work hairdresser slash mechanic Marisa Tomei - in a role that was to win her an Oscar. They have an important court case to win, with a fierce District Attorney to beat, and a Judge (in a career best turn from Fred Gwynn) who is a stickler for the rules.
