AGM and Talk on Sarah Baker and her Kentish Theatres

Sarah Baker's 'Great Grand Theatre' in Canterbury's Orange St opened in 1789. She went on to have three more in Kent. Dr Jean Baker follows her colourful life from strolling player to top impresario.
Sarah Baker was an illiterate fairground performer who became one of the most successful self-made women of her time.

Born in 1737, she grew up travelling the country with her mother and younger sister in order to entertain crowds at country fairs and race meetings. Yet she went on to build 4 theatres in Kent, the first in Canterbury in 1789. Dr.Jean Baker tells the story of her fascinating life in volatile Georgian England.

Organised by St Peter's Residents Association, the talk is preceded by the AGM. Both members and non-members very welcome to attend. Members free, non-members £5 including 1st glass of wine/soft drink.

6.30pm at The Beerling Hall (formerly Dominican Priory), by kind permission of Kings School, St Peter's Lane, Canterbury CT1 2BP.
