A seaside literary festival is bringing authors, comedians, musicians and podcasters together for a nine-day book-filled bonanza.
Margate Bookie is celebrating its 10th anniversary and, to mark the occasion, this year boasts the biggest line-up yet, with children’s workshops, poetry slams and celebrity guests.
The main event takes place at Turner Contemporary, Margate’s art gallery and hipster hotspot, on Saturday, October 5 and Sunday, October 6.
The festival’s Big Weekend will see comic and Absolutely Fabulous star Helen Lederer take centre stage in a live recording of the You’re Booked podcast.
The podcast, hosted by author Daisy Buchanan, will see the Comedy Women in Print Awards founder being interviewed about her favourite books in front of an audience.
Also appearing at the gallery over the weekend will be mystery writer Lisa Jewell, Turner Prize winning artist Jeremy Deller, Selecter singer Pauline Black and BBC radio presenter and stand-up comedian Robin Ince.
While these two days are set to be chock-full of talks and performances, the festival actually spans more than a week of activities and events.
It all kicks off with a weekend of creative writing workshops at Marine Studios.
The Write Up sessions, created by playwright Nicola Wren and sponsored by the Amazon Literary Partnership, cover a range of topics from editing to finding your voice and are led by experienced writers.
Throughout the week, there will be plenty of things to see and do, including a book club at Wildes Café, panel discussions at the Margate School, a poetry slam at Dreamland, guided walks through the town and a showcase for local writers.
There’s also a children’s festival that has been curated by award-winning children’s author Tamara Macfarlane, who also owns the independent bookshop Tales on Moon Lane in Whitstable.
There will be interactive storytelling sessions from Canterbury-based illustrator Esther Coombs, Kodi and the Mystery of Komodo Island author Paul Deslandes and Garry Parsons, who illustrated Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter’s The Dinosaur That Pooped book series. All of the children’s events are free to attend.
“Margate Bookie continues to be a fantastic mix of outstanding local talent and inspiring names from further afield,” says festival founder Andreas Loizou. “I love how so many people in east Kent work together to make Bookie such a success.”
Margate Bookie takes place from Saturday, September 28 to Sunday, October 6. You can find the full festival programme here.
A pass for both days of the Big Weekend at Turner Contemporary costs £58.
Workshops taking place at various venues in Margate are ticketed separately and must be booked online in advance.
