A Kent castle, which had been due to stage a re-enactment of an historic siege, has had to cancel the event due to strong winds forecast for the weekend.

Battle lines and swords were due to be drawn this weekend at Dover Castle for its popular Siege! event on Saturday and Sunday, reliving the real life siege of some 800 years ago.

But organisers English Heritage issued a statement this afternoon saying the event could not go ahead safely.

A yellow wind weather warning has been issued for Kent for Saturday by the Met Office.

The organisation said: "Siege! at Dover Castle has been cancelled. This is because the forecast storms and high winds mean that we cannot safely set up and run the event.

"Whilst the event will not be taking place, the site will remain open for visitors. You are welcome to visit but please note that normal admission prices will apply," adding: "We are sorry for any disappointment or inconvenience caused."

Anyone who has pre-booked tickets will be automatically refunded within 10 days.

The event recreates the siege of the castle in 1216 when Prince Louis of France aimed to seize the English throne, but his path was blocked by the fortress of Dover Castle.
